Summary
- AI tool analyzes facial photos to estimate patient survival.
- Facial features near eyes are key indicators for the AI.
- AI aims to support personalized treatment decisions by doctors.

US researchers have developed an artificial intelligence tool, 'FaceSurvival', designed to help medical professionals gauge a patient's survival by analyzing a single photograph of their face. The AI was trained using millions of images of healthy individuals and 35,000 photos of cancer patients. It focuses on subtle features around the eyes to estimate prognosis.
This technology is still in its developmental stages and not yet suitable for clinical application. However, its creators aim to provide doctors with a more quantitative and scalable method for assessing physical reserve, particularly for older populations or those undergoing intensive treatments. The tool is intended to complement, rather than replace, a physician's diagnostic capabilities.
Separately, researchers are also exploring an AI tool called 'FaceAge' to predict biological age based on facial indicators like nasolabial folds and frown lines. Both tools require significantly more data, especially from diverse ethnic groups, to validate their effectiveness and ensure broad applicability.
