AI T-Shirt Detects Hidden Heart Dangers
6 Mar
Summary
- An AI-powered T-shirt monitors heart rhythm for extended periods.
- It aims to detect hidden inherited heart rhythm disorders.
- The technology may reach clinical practice within five years.

A groundbreaking development in heart health is emerging from researchers at Imperial College London, who are creating an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered T-shirt designed for continuous heart monitoring. This wearable technology aims to detect inherited heart rhythm disorders that can be silent and strike unexpectedly.
Traditional electrocardiograms offer only a brief snapshot of heart activity, often missing intermittent abnormalities. The new T-shirt, made with a comfortable, washable fabric containing numerous sensors, records heart electrical signals over days. AI algorithms then analyze this extensive data for patterns indicative of conditions like Brugada syndrome.
Supported by the British Heart Foundation, the research involves training the AI with data from over 1,000 individuals. Approximately 200 volunteers will test the shirt for up to three months to assess its effectiveness in detecting abnormal rhythms outside of a clinical setting.
Inherited heart conditions affect millions in the U.S., contributing to rising sudden cardiac death rates among younger adults. This technology offers the potential for earlier detection and intervention, providing families with crucial time to plan and protect loved ones.
The researchers estimate this AI T-shirt technology could be implemented in clinical practice within five years, following rigorous trials and regulatory approval. Initial testing focuses on adults, with potential future expansion to children. The ultimate goal is to equip doctors with enhanced tools to identify and manage these potentially fatal disorders.
