Researchers from the University of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have collaborated with AI firm BlueSky to develop a groundbreaking application designed to detect depression in women during and after pregnancy. This innovative app prompts users to complete various tasks, during which its software meticulously analyzes their facial expressions, speech patterns, and involuntary movements.
Upon task completion, the technology flags individuals exhibiting depression scores above a predetermined threshold. The primary objective is to enable earlier intervention and facilitate open conversations between women and their GPs regarding mood fluctuations experienced during and following childbirth.
The study, initiated in 2024, is currently in its advanced stages and is slated for completion in October of this year. Previous research highlighted that 39% of maternal deaths in the UK between six weeks and one year postpartum were due to suicide, underscoring the urgency of such initiatives.
Dr. Neil Nixon, a lead researcher, emphasized the critical role of early identification in preventing suicide, a leading cause of mortality in the postnatal period. He noted that approximately one-third of women who have participated in the study have been flagged for depression, suggesting a significant need for accessible mental health support during this vulnerable time.
