AI Fights Superbugs: New Chatbot Aids Doctors

In a significant advancement against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), digital tools are enhancing the quality of antibiotic prescribing in African hospitals. A pilot project involving four hospitals in Zambia and Kenya has introduced an AI-powered chatbot and an interactive app to assist medical staff. These tools provide guidance on appropriate antibiotic use, helping to curb the growing threat of AMR, which is linked to millions of deaths annually.

The Antibiotic Stewardship Programme through Innovation, Research, and Education (ASPIRE) supports healthcare workers using technology readily available on their phones. The interactive app analyzes patient data to suggest treatment options based on national and WHO guidelines. Simultaneously, a WhatsApp chatbot allows for natural language queries, further empowering clinicians. Early outcomes indicate a reduction in antibiotic prescriptions and a notable improvement in patient recovery, with some patients getting better sooner due to tailored treatments.

This technological intervention has also led to substantial cost savings for healthcare facilities and patients. Furthermore, the programme includes a chatbot aimed at educating patients about antimicrobials, increasing their awareness and empowerment. Since mid-2025, hundreds of health staff have utilized these tools, leading to a five-fold increase in the use of diagnostic lab tests to guide treatment decisions. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in improving global health security.
