The Antibiotic Stewardship Programme through Innovation, Research, and Education (ASPIRE) supports healthcare workers using technology readily available on their phones. The interactive app analyzes patient data to suggest treatment options based on national and WHO guidelines. Simultaneously, a WhatsApp chatbot allows for natural language queries, further empowering clinicians. Early outcomes indicate a reduction in antibiotic prescriptions and a notable improvement in patient recovery, with some patients getting better sooner due to tailored treatments.
This technological intervention has also led to substantial cost savings for healthcare facilities and patients. Furthermore, the programme includes a chatbot aimed at educating patients about antimicrobials, increasing their awareness and empowerment. Since mid-2025, hundreds of health staff have utilized these tools, leading to a five-fold increase in the use of diagnostic lab tests to guide treatment decisions. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in improving global health security.
