Ahmedabad Swelters: Waterborne Illnesses Surge
7 Apr
Summary
- Over 100 diarrhea and dozens of typhoid cases reported in early April.
- 26 Ahmedabad neighborhoods placed under high-risk surveillance.
- Infrastructure performing better despite rising patient numbers.

Ahmedabad is grappling with a significant rise in waterborne diseases as summer temperatures fluctuate. In the initial five days of April, the city recorded over 100 cases of diarrhea and dozens of typhoid infections. This alarming trend has prompted health officials to place 26 neighborhoods under high-risk surveillance to curb potential outbreaks.
Since the beginning of 2026, Ahmedabad has faced a substantial health burden, with over 1,100 cases of diarrhea and nearly 450 cases of typhoid reported. The city's total health statistics for the year also include hundreds of jaundice and dengue cases.
Despite the escalating patient numbers, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials note an improvement in infrastructure performance compared to the previous year. Complaints regarding water pollution, drainage blockages, and water leakage have generally seen a decrease in the early months of 2026 compared to 2025, even within the identified high-risk areas.
