Dengue Surge in Ahmedabad: Cases Exceed Last Year's Total
3 Nov
Summary
- Dengue cases in Ahmedabad have surpassed last year's total by October.
- Warm days and cool nights contribute to mosquito breeding, AMC official states.
- Gastroenteritis, jaundice, and typhoid also show high case numbers.
As of early November 2026, Ahmedabad is grappling with a persistent dengue outbreak, with cases already surpassing the entire count from the previous year. Between October 1 and 31, 2026, the city recorded 513 new dengue cases, adding to a substantial tally that has reached 1,269 by the end of October.
An Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) official noted that the unusual weather patterns, with warm days and cool nights, contribute to mosquito breeding. Stagnant water in coolers and air conditioners provides a breeding ground, prompting AMC to seal affected commercial units and construction sites.
Beyond dengue, the city faces a broader health challenge, reporting thousands of cases of gastroenteritis, jaundice, and typhoid between January 1 and October 31, 2026. During October alone, 167 gastroenteritis cases, 42 jaundice cases, and 194 typhoid cases were recorded.
Water quality is also a concern, with 11 water samples showing zero chlorine content and 20 samples deemed unfit for consumption after bacteriological testing during October.
