- This initiative significantly improves livelihoods and social engagement for recipients.
- Subsidized glasses cost around £2, compared to £25 market price.

Churches are stepping in as a vital distribution network for eyeglasses in several African nations, including Uganda. This initiative, spearheaded by the charity VisionSpring, leverages the trusted presence of religious institutions to reach communities where medical clinics are scarce.
Reverend Robert Mayambala Tendo in Uganda noted the profound impact of affordable glasses, which can cost as little as £2. These spectacles are enabling individuals to return to work, improve their livelihoods, and reconnect with their communities.
The program, which began in Africa in 2023, has seen success in distributing millions of pairs of glasses globally over two decades. VisionSpring partners with various church councils in countries like Zambia, Malawi, and Uganda.
World Health Organization data indicates that 2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from impaired vision, with many in low-income countries unable to access necessary eyewear. This initiative aims to bridge that gap, offering a cost-effective solution to a widespread problem.
