Rockland Woman Beats Lung Cancer with Advanced Therapy

A groundbreaking cancer treatment, available at only one facility in New York, has given Marie Francillion of Rockland County renewed hope and extended time with her family. Francillion was diagnosed with lung cancer after experiencing symptoms like heartburn and shoulder pain. Further examination revealed that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes.

Initially treated with a targeted drug to shrink the tumors, Francillion was then referred to the New York Proton Center in Harlem for proton therapy. Dr. Charles Simone, chief medical officer at the center, explained that this method offers a more precise radiation approach. It targets tumors directly, depositing all radiation within the tumor itself and safeguarding surrounding healthy tissues, which significantly reduces side effects and improves patients' quality of life.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., and while most patients receive some form of radiation, proton therapy now offers an option for many who previously could not be treated safely. Francillion's daughter noted that her mother experienced minimal side effects, remaining active and energetic throughout her treatment.

Since completing her treatment in 2022, Francillion has achieved major milestones, including celebrating her daughter's wedding and welcoming two grandchildren. She recently turned 65 and continues to be monitored every three months, showing no signs of cancer recurrence, a testament to the advancements in cancer care and the dedication to research.
