A 58-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) has had his forearm successfully treated and restored after sustaining severe chemical burns in Dubai. An accidental sulphuric acid spillage at his workplace led to deep and extensive injuries requiring immediate, specialized medical intervention.
The plastic surgery department at Father Muller Medical College Hospital undertook a series of advanced procedures to manage the critical injuries. These treatments included repeated surgical debridements to remove damaged tissue, vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) dressings to promote healing, and definitive skin grafting to cover the affected areas.
The dedicated medical team, comprising professors and consultant plastic surgeons Dr. Aravind L Rao, Dr. Satish Bhat, Dr. Akanksha Rajpoot, and Dr. Karthik Aithal, worked alongside resident doctors and anaesthesia specialists to ensure the patient's limb was salvaged and functional use was restored.
Father Muller Rotary Skin Bank, managed by the plastic surgery department, provided preserved donor skin. These donations are vital for patients with major burns and traumatic skin loss, significantly improving healing outcomes and serving as a lifeline for those with severe burn injuries.
