Blood Pressure: Wait 30 Mins After These Activities
2 Oct
Summary
- Wait 30 minutes after exercise, meals, or caffeine before measuring blood pressure.
- Blood pressure readings should be taken on the left arm for accuracy.
- Take three readings and average them for a precise blood pressure estimate.
High blood pressure poses a significant global health threat, contributing to heart disease and stroke deaths. In India, it causes approximately 1.6 million deaths annually. To ensure accurate home blood pressure readings, Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, a neurologist, emphasized several key practices. It is vital to wait a minimum of 30 minutes after engaging in activities such as exercising, eating a meal, consuming caffeine, smoking, or drinking alcohol before measuring your blood pressure.
Dr. Sehrawat also advised taking readings on the left arm. For the most reliable measurement, it is recommended to take three separate readings and then compute their average. The blood pressure cuff should be positioned at heart level, whether you are sitting or lying down. Ensure the cuff is snug, allowing two fingers to fit comfortably underneath.
