Brothers' Garden Transformed for Wheelchair Access
18 Mar
Summary
- Two brothers with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy received a garden makeover.
- Volunteers created a fully accessible outdoor space in 48 hours.
- The transformation allows the boys independent outdoor access.

Brothers Benjamin and Samuel, aged 10 and 11, have seen their garden transformed thanks to the efforts of volunteers. Both boys have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive muscle-weakening condition, and use electric wheelchairs. Their mother, Abigail, explained the garden's previous multi-level design made it inaccessible, preventing safe outdoor independence.
Children's charity WellChild's Helping Hands programme undertook the 48-hour project. Volunteers worked tirelessly to create a fully accessible space, laying artificial grass, a new patio, and decking. This transformation, completed on Wednesday, will allow Benjamin and Samuel to enjoy their garden independently and safely.
The charity relies on corporate social responsibility programs to fund and execute such vital makeovers. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most common form of the condition, typically affects boys and progresses rapidly, with no current cure but manageable symptoms.
