AbbVie Drug Shows Promise Against Skin Disease
22 Oct
Summary
- Experimental drug lutikizumab significantly reduced lesions.
- Trial met main goal for chronic skin condition patients.
- Combination therapy with weight-loss drug planned.

AbbVie's experimental drug, lutikizumab, demonstrated significant success in a late-stage study for hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic skin condition. The study showed that approximately 31% of patients treated with lutikizumab experienced at least a 75% reduction in inflammatory skin lesions after 16 weeks, surpassing the placebo group's 23%.
Looking ahead, AbbVie plans to test lutikizumab in combination with its experimental weight-loss drug, ABBV-295, by the end of the year. This dual approach aims to combat obesity, a known factor exacerbating the skin condition.
The company also sees potential for lutikizumab as a standalone treatment or in combination with its drug Rinvoq for hidradenitis suppurativa. The market for such treatments is projected to exceed $10 billion by 2035.
