Doctors at Rela Hospital in Chennai successfully treated a 97-year-old man's severe rotator cuff tear using a novel minimally invasive technique. The patient, who had suffered a fall at home, regained the use of his left shoulder after the arthroscopic procedure. His advanced age and underlying cardiac condition made general anesthesia a significant risk.
To address this, a biodegradable balloon spacer was employed. Inserted through small incisions, this implant cushioned the shoulder joint, reducing friction and restoring movement. Notably, the balloon dissolves over several months, leaving no permanent fixture. This innovative approach, performed under an interscalene nerve block, ensured the patient's comfort and safety, allowing for a faster recovery.
Physicians noted that rotator cuff tears are increasingly common in older adults due to age-related tendon weakening. Factors like diabetes, hypertension, smoking, and repetitive overhead activities further elevate this risk. The patient was discharged within two days, benefiting from early physiotherapy and arm support.
