GP Reveals 8p Cholesterol Buster
11 Mar
Summary
- A study showed 300g of porridge reduced LDL cholesterol by 10%.
- This bargain breakfast costs only 8p per serving.
- The method may also aid weight loss and improve blood pressure.

An NHS GP has shared findings from a study highlighting a remarkably inexpensive breakfast option that can notably reduce high cholesterol. The expert explained that consuming 300g of porridge made with water over a two-day period led to a 10% drop in 'bad' LDL cholesterol levels.
This budget-friendly breakfast, costing as little as 8p per serving, is rich in beta-glucan, a soluble fibre. This fibre binds to cholesterol in the gut, preventing its absorption. The study also revealed additional health advantages, including an average weight loss of 2kg and sustained improvements in blood pressure for six weeks.
The GP emphasized the importance of 'slow fibre' foods like oats, beans, and lentils for managing cholesterol as part of a balanced diet. She also advised individuals over 40, particularly those with a family history of high cholesterol, to get tested, reassuring them that long-term statin use is a valid option for risk reduction.
