A man from Tamworth, Staffordshire, endured seven years of unnecessary medical treatment due to a misdiagnosis of polycythaemia vera, a terminal blood cancer. This error led to significant distress and a feeling of lost reality for the 41-year-old.
Referred to George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in November 2017 with tiredness and abnormal blood results, he was initially misdiagnosed. Further misdiagnosis of haemochromatosis followed, resulting in 42 inappropriate blood removal procedures.
Concerns were raised by a nurse in June 2025, leading to tests that revealed he did not have any of the diagnosed conditions. The hospital trust has apologized for falling below standards and assured that actions are in place to prevent recurrence.
He expressed relief at not having the disease but frustration over the seven years of apprehension. The misdiagnosis also caused guilt and worry about passing a potential genetic condition to his teenage sons. He is now pursuing legal action for medical negligence.
