An Ophthalmology Unit at Area Hospital in Bhadrachalam has successfully provided specialized eye surgery to patients from remote tribal regions and neighboring states. Since its dedicated ophthalmic operation theatre was established in December 2023, the unit has performed 400 cataract surgeries. These procedures have benefited patients from various districts within Telangana, as well as those traveling from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
The facility, the first of its kind in the district, was established with financial support from former District Collector Anudeep Durishetty and subsequent backing from other district officials and the ITDA Project Officer. This administrative and financial support has been crucial for procuring intraocular lenses and other essential surgical consumables.
The hospital utilizes modern phacoemulsification techniques for cataract surgeries, achieving these 400 procedures without major complications. Despite functioning with a single contract ophthalmologist, the unit is recognized as a high-performing ophthalmology service within the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad. The hospital's ability to offer specialized surgical care locally, avoiding the need for patients to travel to urban centers, represents a significant healthcare advancement for the remote tribal region.
