A groundbreaking 3D robotic-assisted exoscope, the first of its kind in Scotland, has been installed at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. This advanced technology is enhancing precision in complex neurological surgeries. Thirteen-year-old Toby Peart, who experienced leg pain and pins and needles starting in April 2025, was among the first patients to benefit from this system. After an MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital revealed a non-cancerous brain tumour, Toby was transferred to Glasgow for treatment.
His surgery in November 2025 involved the new 3D exoscope, which offers superior image quality and illumination, aiding surgeons like consultant neurosurgeon Roddy O'Kane. This technology allows for an upright operating posture, reducing strain on surgeons and potentially improving patient outcomes. Toby's father, Marc, expressed immense gratitude for the care his son received, noting Toby's remarkable progress from initial paralysis post-surgery to returning to school in January 2026. The technology also streamlines workflow and training in the operating theatre, according to clinical lead Emer Campbell.
