$30M Donation Fuels Groundbreaking Medical Research in Edmonton

In July 2025, the University Hospital Foundation in Edmonton, Alberta, announced the recipients of the 2024 Kaye Competition. The annual competition, a partnership between the Foundation and the University of Alberta Hospital, is funded by a $30 million donation made in 2012 by the late local philanthropist and businessman, Donald Kaye.
Since its inception in 2017, the Kaye Competition has awarded over $7 million to 45 research and clinical teams who are using innovative approaches, new partnerships, and bold ideas to advance patient care. The 2024 recipients are working on projects related to cancer, prostate cancer, and heart failure treatments, including the development of a point-of-care cancer treatment, the use of a new imaging technique to improve prostate cancer diagnosis, and the study of ketone therapy's impact on heart failure symptoms.
