A 60-year-old man is celebrating three decades since undergoing a life-saving heart transplant. Mark Baker, originally from Attleborough, Norfolk, received his new heart at the age of 30 after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at 18. This milestone marks a significant achievement, as the average adult in the UK lives for about 14 years post-transplant.
Baker recounted his journey, including treatment at St Thomas' Hospital and subsequent health issues that led to heart failure. His only viable option became a transplant, which he received at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. He described the experience as scary but ultimately life-changing.
Thirty years later, Baker continues to attend regular check-ups at the Royal Papworth Hospital. He attributes his extended life to the generosity of organ donors, emphasizing that without them, many individuals would not survive. His transplant has allowed him to witness his own children grow and to become a grandfather of four.
