Doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur have performed a rare and complex surgery to remove a giant retroperitoneal tumor weighing 20.8 kg. The patient, a 59-year-old morbidly obese individual weighing 160 kg, underwent the over eight-hour procedure on May 29. The tumor, measuring 44×37×24 cm, is believed to be one of the largest retroperitoneal liposarcomas documented in India and worldwide.
The surgical team faced significant challenges due to the patient's obesity and the tumor's extensive adherence to vital structures, including the right kidney, which was removed with the tumor. The patient is now stable and recovering well, already mobilizing post-surgery.
Medical literature review suggests this tumor is the largest of its kind reported from Rajasthan and among the top 15 largest globally. Doctors emphasize that retroperitoneal tumors often grow silently, and obesity can obscure symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis.
