22 Mar
Summary
- Sixteen people have died from suspected milk adulteration.
- Ethylene glycol contamination caused fatal multi-organ failure.
- An identified dairy unit in Narasapuram is the suspected source.

Tragedy has struck East Godavari district as a suspected milk adulteration incident has claimed the lives of 16 individuals. Three other persons remain hospitalized in Rajamahendravaram as of Sunday, March 22, 2026.
The crisis dates back to mid-February, when residents in Lalacheruvu reported severe health issues, including vomiting and acute kidney failure, after consuming milk from a local dairy. Laboratory results confirmed that ethylene glycol contamination led to multi-organ failure in the victims.
Investigations have pinpointed a dairy in Narasapuram village as the suspected source of the contamination. Supply from this unit was immediately halted upon identification. Between February 16 and March 21, twenty individuals were hospitalized due to the contaminated milk.
Authorities deployed rapid response teams and conducted house-to-house surveys in affected areas. The Food Safety Department and Animal Husbandry Department have collected extensive samples for microbial, chemical, and toxicological analysis. Police have registered a case and taken a suspect into custody.
