Summary
- Urinal found in food storage at Olympia Coffee House.
- Nair Hospital canteen license suspended for patient safety.
- Over 2,800 kg of milk and dairy products seized statewide.
A rigorous food safety initiative across Maharashtra has resulted in the suspension of licenses for 14 food establishments, including the historic Olympia Coffee House in Colaba and the canteen at Nair Hospital. The action was spearheaded by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under its Safe Food Safe Maharashtra campaign.
Inspections at Olympia Coffee House revealed shocking conditions, including a urinal in the food storage area, widespread cockroach and fly infestations, meat residue in a refrigerator, and food preparation occurring on the floor. Unsanitary utensil washing, unclean water, and improper food segregation were also noted, alongside a lack of mandatory food-handler training for most staff.
Nair Hospital canteen's license was immediately suspended, emphasizing the FDA's commitment to protecting the health of patients and visitors. Other establishments across Mumbai, including Blink Commerce Private Limited, Vishwas Sweets and Snacks, and A-1 General & Dry Fruits, also had their licenses suspended due to hygiene and health standard violations.
The FDA inspected a total of 27 food establishments, issuing improvement notices to 13 others. The drive also resulted in the seizure of 2,813 kg of milk and dairy products, valued at Rs 7.38 lakh, and an additional 2,580.7 kg of various food products and 12.5 litres of toddy, worth Rs 4.66 lakh statewide.
