Dance Your Way to Health: 10-Minute Routine Transforms Girls

Summary

  • Ten-minute high-intensity dance routine improved heart health and muscle strength.
  • Study participants gained muscle, lost weight, and reduced body fat levels.
  • Dance program cut sedentary time and increased sleep duration for girls.

A pilot study conducted by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) in Chennai has revealed that a 10-minute high-intensity dance routine can significantly improve the health of schoolgirls. The program, named Thandav, tailored to cultural elements, has already garnered 1,000 registrations for its online and offline sessions.

The 12-week trial involving 108 girls aged 13 to 15 demonstrated measurable health improvements. Participants averaged an increase of 1,073 steps daily, gained nearly 1kg of muscle, lost 0.7kg of body weight, and reduced body fat by 2 percentage points. Blood pressure and resting heart rate also saw notable decreases.

Experts highlight that the increase in muscle mass, rather than just weight loss, is a crucial finding for lifelong metabolic health. This dance initiative aims to address rising concerns about obesity and prediabetes among Indian teenage girls, encouraging physical activity through engaging music and short, intense workout loops.
