Zanskar Revives Dying Geothermal Plant
29 Jul
Summary
- Startup Zanskar transformed a declining geothermal plant.
- AI and advanced drilling created one of the US's most productive wells.
- Success revitalizes the neglected geothermal energy sector.

Energy startup Zanskar has successfully revived a geothermal power plant in New Mexico, turning a previously declining site into one of the nation's most productive. The Lightning Dock site, acquired by Zanskar in 2024, faced significant challenges with rapidly cooling shallow wells, impacting power generation.
Following the drilling of a new, deeper well and a year of operation, Zanskar reports a complete turnaround. This new well has become exceptionally productive, providing sufficient heat to consistently run the power plant. Zanskar cofounder Joel Edwards highlighted that this achievement alters perceptions of geothermal systems.
The company employed artificial intelligence to identify optimal drilling locations and utilized advanced drill bit technology refined by the oil and gas industry. This allowed them to drill an 8,000-foot well 35% faster, tapping into hotter geothermal reserves. Experts note that Zanskar benefited from purchasing an existing site, reducing initial costs and leveraging previous geological data.
This development comes amid a broader resurgence in the geothermal industry, marked by increased investment and innovative technologies. Zanskar's success underscores the potential of re-exploring older well sites with modern approaches, potentially boosting renewable baseload power generation.
