A herd of Asian elephants, initially observed traveling through northern Yunnan province in March 2020, has found a permanent and comfortable residence in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. This particular herd, which grew to 22 members with the recent arrival of two calves, has integrated well into the region.
This herd is one of several in the Xishuangbanna area, with two other well-established families, the Ranran and Dalubao, each comprising around 30 elephants. Collectively, over 300 elephants now inhabit Xishuangbanna, indicating a thriving population. To further safeguard these animals and other wildlife, the revised Yunnan Provincial Regulation on the Protection of Terrestrial Wildlife is scheduled to take effect on August 15, enhancing conservation efforts in the region.
