12 Jun
Summary
- Dog slaughterhouse in Yulin permanently closed by owner.
- Closure occurred just before the city's annual Dog Meat Festival.
- Nine dogs were saved from slaughter during the closure.

A dog slaughterhouse in Yulin, China, has been permanently shuttered. The owner, Mr. Huang, agreed to a legally binding deal to close the business, expressing that he felt relieved to leave his 20-year trade. He cited ethical qualms and the industry's decline as reasons for his decision.
This closure, facilitated by Vshine Animal Protection Association and Human World for Animals, occurred less than two weeks before the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, an event that has faced significant backlash. Nine dogs were rescued from the property at the time of the closure.
The Yulin Dog Meat Festival, first held in 2010, is a relatively recent event and not rooted in traditional Chinese culture. Despite its name, it represents an escalation of the daily dog and cat meat trade in the city.
Over the years, the festival has seen decreased public interest and faced governmental restrictions on dog meat sales. Other Chinese cities, such as Shenzhen and Zhuhai, have already banned the trade of dog and cat meat.
