Public Backs Yorkshire Wolds for Nature Protection
8 Feb
Summary
- Overwhelming public support for Yorkshire Wolds AONB designation.
- 85% of surveyed people backed coastal area status.
- Designation offers stronger legal protection for development.

The Yorkshire Wolds are advancing towards official designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), buoyed by significant public endorsement. Recent surveys conducted by Natural England revealed that 85% of respondents supported AONB status for the coastal stretch, while 78% backed the designation for the inland areas.
This proposed AONB would encompass roughly 180 square miles, covering the north and west slopes of the Wolds, the foothills south of Malton, and valleys in the High Wolds. The coastal section extends around Flamborough Head.
Natural England's report indicates a strong body of evidence meeting the criteria for AONB designation. The bid has garnered support from Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, North Yorkshire Council, and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. Public comments on the proposal are being accepted until March 6.
This move signifies a step toward stronger legal protection for the region's development and conservation efforts. Local councilor Paul West expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the area's natural beauty and its appeal to millions of visitors annually. Continued collaboration with Natural England is planned to advocate for the region's recognition.
