A prominent wolf from Yellowstone's famous Junction Butte pack, identified as 1478F, is believed to have been illegally killed just outside the park around 10 p.m. on Christmas Day. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks began an investigation after receiving a mortality signal from the wolf's collar, which was later found cut off and discarded in a tree.
The incident is thought to have occurred within wolf management Unit 313, where the hunting season had closed after the quota was met. Wildlife advocates are confident that the killed wolf was 1478F, a female born in April 2022 known for her demeanor and hunting prowess, who was expected to become the pack's new alpha.
The manner of death, occurring at night with the collar removed, suggests illegal poaching. Montana officials, with support from organizations like Wolves of the Rockies, have increased the reward for information to $31,000. The Yellowstone wolves are significant contributors to the local economy through tourism.
