Bengaluru Lake Polluted: Upa Lokayuktas Order Action
18 Jul
Summary
- Upa Lokayuktas inspected Yelahanka Lake, finding sewage and illegal constructions.
- Untreated sewage was found discharging directly into the lake, causing contamination.
- Temporary sheds and permanent buildings were discovered within the lake's buffer zone.

Upa Lokayuktas K.N. Phaneendra and B. Veerappa conducted an inspection of Yelahanka Lake in northeastern Bengaluru on July 15, following persistent allegations of encroachment and pollution. The inspection revealed alarming environmental degradation, including untreated sewage stagnating and being discharged directly into the lake.
During their visit, officials observed temporary sheds erected within the 30-meter buffer zone, intended to house laborers for a nearby construction project. Furthermore, permanent residential buildings were found encroaching on the lake's buffer zone along the tank bund road, with ongoing construction noted in one of these structures. Sewage discharge was evident from both sides of the lake.
In response to these findings, the Upa Lokayuktas have issued directives to various departments. Executive engineers from Yelahanka and the Lakes Division are tasked with examining illegal constructions and taking necessary action. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) engineer must identify sewage sources and fix drainage network issues. The Town Planning department is required to map all structures within the buffer zone.
