River Waste Probe: Firms Face Huge Fines
19 Sep
Summary
- Two companies investigated for illegal waste dumping.
- 11 individuals held accountable for pollution.
- Firms face substantial fines for environmental damage.
Investigations are underway for two companies, Qingshan Shipyard and Fujian Lugang Group, accused of illegally dumping solid waste into the Yangtze River near Wuhan's Tianxingzhou island. As a result, 11 individuals have been held accountable. Environmental authorities have mandated the cessation of these activities and ordered pollution elimination measures.
Proposed fines totaling hundreds of thousands of yuan have been levied against the companies and involved vessel owners for their roles in the pollution. The dumped material was identified as sludge from waterway dredging, possessing polluting properties. Despite initial concerns, tests indicated heavy metal levels within standard limits, and water quality monitoring showed stable conditions meeting Class II surface water standards.
The dredging project, commissioned by Qingshan Shipyard and executed by Fujian Lugang Group, had obtained necessary permits. Operations occurred within the designated dumping area, discharging a significant volume of sludge. However, investigations revealed failures in reporting environmental procedures, implementing pollution control, and fulfilling oversight responsibilities by the involved parties.
