IIT Delhi Faces Data Blockade in Yamuna River Disinfection Study
23 Dec
Summary
- IIT Delhi struggles to assess Yamuna river sewage disinfection due to data delays.
- Delhi Jal Board operates 37 sewage plants, with many awaiting upgrades.
- The National Green Tribunal seeks urgent data for river water safety assessment.

IIT Delhi has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it cannot proceed with an assessment of sewage disinfection systems along the Yamuna river due to a lack of crucial data and access. The expert panel, constituted nearly four months ago, is awaiting site visit permissions and operational data from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).
Concerns have been raised regarding the bacterial loads, particularly faecal coliform levels, in treated sewage discharged into the Yamuna. The DJB operates 37 sewage treatment plants (STPs), with many still undergoing technological upgrades and lacking verified disinfection efficacy. The expert committee requires inlet and outlet microbial quality data for a realistic assessment.
