Delhi's efforts to modernize infrastructure have not yet improved the Yamuna River's water quality, as untreated sewage and industrial effluents continue to heavily pollute its drains. A recent Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) report for October found that out of 27 assessed drains, only the Shastri Park drain met prescribed water quality standards. The Sahibabad drain in Uttar Pradesh was identified as the most polluted, with significantly high levels of BOD, COD, and TSS.

Authorities are planning to increase surveillance on 75 drains and sub-drains identified as major contributors to the Yamuna's pollution. The 22-kilometer stretch between Wazirabad and Okhla is particularly affected by 22 major drain discharges. Despite ongoing efforts, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) currently struggles to treat the entire volume of sewage generated in the city, leading to substantial untreated waste entering the river.
