Yamuna Drains Choked: Solid Waste Fouls 33 Locations
25 Jul
Summary
- Yamuna and its drains monitored for waste dumping.
- Solid waste found at 33 out of 52 monitored locations.
- CPCB forwarded findings to multiple agencies for action.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has reported significant waste dumping impacting the Yamuna river system. As part of a case concerning alleged dumping near the Yamuna in April 2026, the CPCB and the National Mission for Clean Ganga identified a need to expand water quality monitoring. This led to a joint monitoring effort by the CPCB, DPCC, and Delhi Jal Board across 52 locations in the Sahibi river's Najafgarh drain and the Shahdara drain. This monitoring, conducted monthly from May 2025 to April 2026, revealed solid waste contamination at 33 of these sites. The CPCB has since escalated these findings to numerous national and state bodies, including the National Mission for Clean Ganga, the Delhi Jal Board, and state pollution control boards in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, urging them to take necessary actions.
