Wuzhizhou Island Goes Carbon Neutral!
12 Jun
Summary
- Wuzhizhou Island launched a 'Zero-Carbon Smart Island' program.
- The island aims for full carbon neutrality after 2046.
- Coral cover has increased to 37.08% due to restoration efforts.

A new 'Zero-Carbon Smart Island' program has been initiated on Wuzhizhou Island, located in China's Hainan Province. This ambitious project aims to achieve carbon neutrality and boost ecotourism, having already received an operational zero-carbon zone design certificate from German energy community representatives.
The island's decarbonization plan outlines four stages, with carbon emissions anticipated to peak between 2026 and 2029. Subsequent phases involve low-level decarbonization from 2030 to 2035, moderate measures from 2036 to 2045, and the ultimate goal of full carbon neutrality after 2046.
Key components of the program include developing climate-neutral tourist experiences and implementing a visitor carbon footprint tracking system. Infrastructure upgrades, such as energy-efficient hotel renovations and a shift to clean energy sources, are projected to reduce energy costs by over 40%.
Wuzhizhou, recognized as China's first tropical marine ranching demonstration zone, has already seen significant investment in its marine ecosystem. Over 90 million yuan has been allocated for conservation, leading to a rise in live coral cover from less than 15% to 37.08% and an increase in fish species to 265.
