A mangrove sapling plantation drive took place on Sunday along the Uppanar river in Sembodai, Nagapattinam, coinciding with World Mangrove Day. The initiative, organized under the 'Namma Nagai Koottam' banner, aims to foster community participation in environmental and social welfare programs. This event marks the second major activity of the Namma Nagai Koottam, following an earlier beach clean-up drive.
Mangrove forests are crucial coastal ecosystems found where freshwater meets seawater. In Nagapattinam, significant mangrove areas are located in Akkaraipettai, Thalainayar, Vedaranyam, and Kodiyakarai. These forests serve as natural defenses against cyclones and erosion, while also acting as vital nurseries for marine life and supporting local livelihoods.
The plantation drive saw enthusiastic participation from over 300 residents of Sembodai, alongside volunteers and officials. The District Collector administered a pledge on World Mangrove Day before the sapling plantation commenced.
