World Cup Stadiums Achieve Green Building Status
6 Jun
Summary
- Thirteen of sixteen stadiums earned LEED certification for sustainability.
- These venues feature over 11,500 solar panels and save millions of gallons of water.
- Despite green efforts, air travel makes this the most polluting World Cup yet.

A significant majority of stadiums for the current FIFA World Cup have successfully obtained green building certifications, emphasizing sustainability in sports infrastructure. Specifically, thirteen out of sixteen venues have been awarded LEED certification, a globally recognized standard for green buildings, with ten achieving this designation since early 2024. These certified stadiums are equipped with over 11,500 solar panels, contributing to clean electricity generation.
Collectively, these venues are set to conserve more than 100 million gallons of potable water annually and eliminate over 5 million single-use plastics each year. Four stadiums are also actively diverting nearly all waste through reuse, recycling, or composting programs. These efforts not only enhance the fan experience and team performance through improved indoor air quality but also contribute to cost savings.
However, environmental experts caution that this tournament is projected to be the most polluting World Cup ever, primarily due to the extensive air travel required for participants and fans across North America. This year's expansion to 48 teams further exacerbates the environmental impact. The tournament is expected to generate over 9 million metric tons of carbon pollution.
Notable venues like the 60-year-old Estadio Azteca in Mexico City have achieved the highest tier of LEED certification, demonstrating that older facilities can meet modern sustainability standards. This historic stadium reduced indoor water use by 36% and energy consumption by nearly 45%. Other certified stadiums include Levi's Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with many earning their certifications since early 2024.
