A swan in Worcester's Institute Park, entangled in fishing line, was successfully freed on Saturday, June 27. Volunteers from Raptor Tales, a local wildlife rescue group, responded to the scene at Salisbury Pond after receiving reports of the distressed bird.
Two rescuers waded into the water near the shore to cut the swan free from the approximately 50 feet of fishing line it was caught in. The male swan, previously observed with a fishing hook in its neck, appeared significantly more at ease after the rescue and rejoined its family on the pond.
This rescue followed public concern and outreach from residents. The city had initially suggested a non-interference approach, a decision met with some criticism by residents observing the swan's plight.
