Algae Alerts: New Signs for England's Largest Lake
12 Aug
Summary
- Dozens of warning signs installed around England's largest lake.
- Signs alert visitors to toxic blue-green algae blooms.
- The Environment Agency funds additional signs across Cumbria.
Dozens of new warning signs are being installed around Windermere, England's largest lake, to alert the public about the dangers of blue-green algae blooms. These microscopic organisms can produce toxins harmful to humans and potentially fatal to pets. The initiative, funded by the Environment Agency, will see approximately 40 signs at Windermere and another 40 placed across Cumbria.
The Love Windermere Partnership, comprising organizations like the Environment Agency and Lake District National Park Authority, is behind the permanent signage. This response comes after requests for clearer public information regarding the algae, which can appear as paint-like scum or discolouration. The signs will help visitors identify the algae and guide them on reporting suspected blooms via the Bloomin' Algae app.
