A retired wind-turbine blade was ingeniously transformed into the primary structural component of a pedestrian and cycling bridge over Poland's Szprotawa River in 2021. Developed in the town of Szprotawa by local company Anmet in collaboration with the Rzeszów University of Technology, this project addressed the community's lack of a convenient river crossing.
The initiative sought sustainable solutions for wind-turbine components, which are difficult to recycle due to their composite nature. Instead of disposal, engineers preserved the blade's structural integrity, incorporating it as the central element of the new bridge. This innovative reuse demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to waste management and infrastructure development.
The bridge's construction was completed by December 2021, significantly improving pedestrian and bicycle movement between eastern and northern Szprotawa. The municipality invested 245,000 Polish złoty into the project, with a portion funded by a regional tourism infrastructure program. This repurposed blade now serves as a functional and symbolic piece of public infrastructure.
