Wildfire Alert: BBQs Spark Extreme Fire Risk
13 Jul
Summary
- Fire service urges no BBQs or bonfires due to extreme wildfire warning.
- Over 60 firefighters battled a large heathland fire near Camberley.
- Careless cigarette or BBQ extinguishment causes most recent wildfires.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is urging the public to refrain from using barbeques or lighting bonfires due to an extreme weather warning for wildfires. This appeal follows a significant incident on Saturday where more than 60 firefighters were deployed to combat a large heathland fire at Blackwater, near Camberley, Surrey.
Firefighters utilized hose reels and specialized wildfire equipment to bring the Blackwater blaze under control. Group Manager Matt Rowe identified the "number one cause" of recent wildfires attended by the service as the "careless extinguishment of a cigarette or a barbeque." He noted that this specific blaze encompassed about eight hectares of difficult terrain and proved challenging due to poor access.
Fire services across the south of England had previously cautioned that hot weather conditions greatly increase wildfire risks. The Blackwater fire required firefighters to remain on-site for approximately 36 hours to ensure it was fully extinguished. The service reported attending numerous weekend incidents that originated from bonfires and barbeques, underscoring the urgency of the current fire prevention message.
