This stark reality highlights a critical oversight, as climate scientists and economists were not consistently accounting for these deaths in their projections until recently.
While the Canadian wildfires of 2023 brought widespread smoke to the Eastern Seaboard, similar events are becoming more common across North America. This includes an increase in large fires in the Eastern U.S. and the growing risk of fires closer to communities.
Adapting to this new reality is proving challenging. Despite past enthusiasm for retrofitting buildings with air filters after a pandemic, little has been accomplished. Similarly, while fire scientists point to policy choices and fuel buildup as contributing factors, the overarching driver remains warming. Effectively managing this escalating risk requires acknowledging that a significant portion of the increased fire risk is directly linked to climate change, necessitating a global response beyond localized management strategies.
