Residents of Mount Dora, Florida, are being reminded to maintain a safe distance from wildlife after several sightings of wild monkeys. Rhesus macaques have recently been spotted in public areas, including a park and near local establishments. City officials posted a warning on social media, emphasizing that the animals are wild and should be observed from afar.
These sightings are occurring in an area roughly 12 miles from Silver Springs, known for its established wild monkey population. This population originated in 1938 when a tour boat operator introduced rhesus macaques to an island in Silver Springs State Park, unaware of their strong swimming abilities. The monkeys subsequently escaped the island and have lived in the wild since.
