Wigan Green Spaces Threatened by Massive Housing Project

Plans for up to 2,000 homes and a new two-mile link road in Wigan have drawn sharp criticism from local residents, particularly horse riders. They describe the affected green spaces as 'awesome nature' and are 'horrified' by the prospect of losing access for their animals and personal well-being. Tracey Ellison, a daily rider, stated, 'If we didn't have the access to open spaces, I couldn't have a horse.'

The development, known as the South Hindley Urban Village scheme, is proposed by Peel Land. Alongside housing, it includes a primary school, sports pitches, and a district centre with shops. Peel Land argues the link road will help relieve congestion on major routes like the A577. Carole Dunnington, another resident, highlighted the therapeutic benefits of the open air, calling its potential loss 'so sad.'

Local MP Josh Simons expressed conditional support, stating he would not back the housing numbers without adequate road funding due to existing congestion. Wigan Council views the link road as crucial for borough connectivity, supporting the delivery of over 17,000 homes across multiple sites. Developer Vistry is transforming a former industrial site into a community of up to 1,500 homes, investing £250 million.
