24 Feb
Summary
- A large white-tailed eagle was sighted in new UK locations over the weekend.
- Experts suggest it's a young, nomadic bird exploring from Scotland.
- Nature lovers and wildlife trusts expressed delight at the rare sighting.

One of the UK's largest birds of prey, the white-tailed eagle, has been observed significantly beyond its typical breeding areas, exciting many.
Over the recent weekend, bird watchers documented the majestic bird at various spots, including Druridge Bay, Sunderland, and Hartlepool. One fortunate observer, Jo Richardson, described seeing the eagle near Whitley Bay as a "very special" experience, even after having seen them before in Scotland.
Experts from the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation suggest this particular eagle is likely a juvenile from Scotland, where approximately 200 pairs now reside. Young white-tailed eagles are known to be quite nomadic during their early years, exploring new areas for the first time.
Local wildlife trusts welcomed the eagle's presence. Mike Pratt of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust stated his delight, calling the bird's appearance a "treat" for the public and bird watchers, noting its visits to several reserves along Druridge Bay and near Whitley Bay.
