Whale Spotted Off Polish Coast After German Sightings
10 Aug
Summary
- A whale was recently sighted near Międzyzdroje on Poland's Baltic coast.
- Polish lifeguards escorted the whale away from watercraft.
- A humpback whale nicknamed Timmy died earlier this year after strandings.

A whale, potentially over six meters long, was recently observed swimming near the Polish Baltic coast off Międzyzdroje. Marine mammal experts from WWF Poland were consulted to assess its condition. The whale appeared to be swimming freely and was not entangled in fishing nets, according to initial reports.
Polish lifeguards provided an escort for the animal aboard a boat, guiding it eastward towards Wisełka to ensure its safety from watercraft. A video shared on social media showed the whale's distinctive grey-and-white mottled back and blowhole. This sighting follows earlier observations of a whale in German waters, including at Wismar and off the Wustrow pier.
Earlier this year, a humpback whale nicknamed Timmy experienced several strandings along Germany's Baltic coast. Despite a private rescue operation aimed at returning it to the North Sea, the whale was later discovered deceased on a Danish island, highlighting the challenges such animals face in coastal waters.
