Western Ghats: Eco-Sensitive Zones Declared
22 Jun
Summary
- Eco-Sensitive Areas to protect bio-diversity hotspots in Western Ghats.
- Mining and polluting industries banned to promote sustainable development.
- Kerala and Karnataka object to proposed industrial restrictions.

The Western Ghats, recognized as a global bio-diversity hotspot, are set to have significant areas declared as Eco-Sensitive Zones across Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra. This initiative, based on recommendations from a committee led by former ISRO Chairman K. Kasturirangan, aims to safeguard the region's rich ecological heritage.
The proposed measures include a ban on activities such as mining, construction of power plants, polluting industries, and large-scale development projects. The goal is to conserve the environment and encourage sustainable practices for local communities. The initial proposal encompassed six states, but Kerala and Karnataka have expressed reservations.
Kerala seeks a reduction in its designated Eco-Sensitive Area, while Karnataka questions the overall rationale. Their objections primarily concern the proposed bans on mining, quarrying, and new industrial establishments. The government plans to proceed with notifying the zones in the three consenting states.
