Summary
- Owner resides at quarry to prevent further illegal disposals.
- Environment Agency is investigating suspected illegal waste dumping.
- Site owner was unaware of past illegal activity due to illness.
Frank Spencer, owner of Calder Quarry in Elland, West Yorkshire, has taken up residence at the site to personally prevent any further suspected illegal waste disposals. The Environment Agency (EA) has been conducting an investigation into the quarry for alleged illegal waste dumping since last year. Earlier this month, the EA secured a court order to restrict access to the location, warning that breaches are criminal offenses.
Mr. Spencer explained that he had been unaware of the illegal activities due to a stroke he suffered late last year. He claims the site has now been cleared of any improper materials, including nine 90 cubic metre loads of dirt. He acknowledged past issues with fly-tipping on the access lane over the last 16 years. Spencer invited the public to visit the quarry to see the current situation for themselves.
