A community-led initiative is set to transform part of a former commercial forestry plantation near Ratagan into an eco-village on the picturesque shores of Loch Duich in the west Highlands. The Kyle and Lochalsh Community Trust has taken ownership of the land, with ambitious plans for its development.
The proposed eco-village includes the construction of six affordable rental homes and two business units at Ratagan. Additionally, the site will feature a community growing area and two woodland crofts, offering a unique blend of housing and land management. At Scaraig, plans include three crofts and two affordable house sites.
Maggie Byrne of the trust highlighted the project's significance, stating it's a vital step for the area's sustainability. The initiative aims to retain young people in the region by providing affordable housing and new livelihood opportunities. Funding for the land acquisition was supported by the Scottish Land Fund.
