- Wayanad aims to be India's first e-waste-free model district by November 1, 2026.
- 31 tonnes of e-waste were collected from government offices in the first phase.
- Participation from households and private establishments is crucial for success.

Wayanad is embarking on a pioneering mission to achieve the distinction of being India's first e-waste-free model district by November 1, 2026. This significant environmental undertaking has commenced its second phase, focusing on engaging households and private businesses after successfully collecting 31 tonnes of electronic waste from government offices.
The campaign, supported by local self-government institutions and elected representatives, involves collecting e-waste via dedicated ward-level counters and door-to-door initiatives. These collected materials will be processed and disposed of scientifically by contracted agencies, with citizens receiving government-fixed compensation for their contributions.
Agriculture Minister T. Siddique emphasized the necessity of universal participation from all households and private entities to meet the November 1, Keralam Formation Day deadline. He highlighted that Wayanad's success would set a precedent for other districts across the nation.
Programme Officer K. Anoop of Suchitwa Mission underscored the urgency, noting that e-waste contains hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, posing risks to health and the environment if not managed properly. The initiative is expected to bolster environmental safety, especially for children, and enhance Wayanad's appeal as a tourist destination.
