Water Woes: Ditch Pools for Blasters as Heatwave Strains Supply
27 May
Summary
- Water supply disruptions hit Kent and Sussex due to heatwave demand.
- Customers urged to use water only for essential purposes like drinking.
- South East Water requests residents stop using hosepipes and sprinklers.

South East Water (SEW) is appealing to customers to conserve water as the summer heatwave intensifies, leading to water supply issues in parts of Kent and Sussex. Areas experienced intermittent supply problems over the recent bank holiday and earlier this week.
SEW's spokesperson highlighted that the current high demand, coupled with normal levels of leaks and bursts, caused the disruptions. As the hot weather is expected to persist, the company is requesting that residents prioritize essential water uses such as drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. They are also advising against non-essential water usage.
To alleviate pressure on the network, SEW has asked people to cease using jet washers, hosepipes, and sprinklers. They suggest alternatives like water blasters for cooling children and reusing water from baths and showers for gardening. SEW is working to repair leaks and increase water output at treatment works.
